Two people rescued after car falls through ice on Lake Winnipeg

Two individuals were saved from a potentially life-threatening situation after their car fell through the ice on Lake Winnipeg.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, when the two individuals were driving on the frozen lake near Victoria Beach. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the car broke through the ice and became partially submerged in the frigid waters.

Thankfully, a nearby resident witnessed the incident and immediately called for help. The RCMP, along with the local fire department and emergency medical services, responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found the two individuals clinging to the roof of their vehicle, which was rapidly sinking into the icy lake. With the help of specialized equipment, the responders were able to safely rescue the individuals from the freezing waters.

Both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of hypothermia. They are expected to make a full recovery.

The RCMP is reminding the public to exercise caution when venturing onto frozen bodies of water, as the thickness and stability of the ice can vary greatly. They also advise individuals to always have a plan in case of emergencies and to carry necessary safety equipment, such as ice picks and life jackets.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise when venturing onto frozen lakes and the importance of being prepared for any potential emergencies.
