Two Canadians stranded by Taiwan earthquake, says firefighting agency

Two Canadians were left stranded in Taiwan after a powerful earthquake struck the country on Thursday, according to the National Fire Agency.

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the eastern city of Hualien, causing buildings to sway and roads to crack. The two Canadians, who have not been identified, were reportedly staying in a hotel in the city at the time of the earthquake.

The National Fire Agency stated that the two Canadians were unable to leave the city due to damaged roads and transportation disruptions. They are currently being assisted by local authorities and are said to be in good health.

The earthquake, which struck at 1:01 a.m. local time, also caused power outages and disrupted train services in the area. The Hualien County government has set up an emergency response center to coordinate rescue efforts and provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 21 kilometers north-northeast of Hualien at a depth of 10 kilometers. The agency also reported that there have been at least 19 aftershocks, with the strongest measuring at a magnitude of 4.8.

No casualties have been reported so far, but the earthquake has caused damage to buildings and infrastructure in the area. The Hualien County government has urged residents to stay calm and follow safety protocols.

The Canadian government has not yet released a statement regarding the stranded Canadians, but the Embassy of Canada in Taiwan has advised Canadians in the affected area to monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

The earthquake in Taiwan serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural disasters and the importance of being prepared for such events. Our thoughts are with those affected by this earthquake and we hope for a swift recovery for the affected areas.
