Kelowna councillors can opt out of 35 per cent pay raise

Kelowna city councillors have been given the option to decline a proposed 3.5% pay raise. This decision was made during a council meeting on Monday, where the topic of council remuneration was discussed.

According to the proposal, the pay raise would bring the annual salary for councillors from $36,500 to $37,800, and the mayor’s salary from $106,000 to $109,600. This increase is in line with the Consumer Price Index, which measures the cost of living in a particular area.

However, some councillors expressed concerns about accepting the pay raise during a time when many residents are facing financial difficulties due to the ongoing pandemic. Councillor Loyal Wooldridge stated that he would be opting out of the raise, and encouraged his fellow councillors to do the same.

Mayor Colin Basran also shared his thoughts on the matter, stating that while he understands the need for council members to be fairly compensated for their work, he also recognizes the current economic climate and the financial strain it has placed on many individuals and families.

Ultimately, the decision to accept or decline the pay raise is up to each individual councillor. They have until December 31st to make their decision and inform the city clerk.

This topic will be revisited in the future, as council has requested a review of the remuneration policy to be conducted by an independent committee. This review will take into consideration factors such as the cost of living, workload, and comparison to other municipalities.

In the meantime, the city will continue to operate with the current remuneration rates. The proposed pay raise will only take effect if a majority of councillors choose to accept it.

As always, the decisions made by city council are aimed at serving the best interests of the community. The option for councillors to decline the pay raise shows their commitment to being responsible stewards of taxpayer money.
