The Brantford Sports Council recently held its annual awards ceremony, recognizing outstanding athletes and coaches in the local sports community.
The event, which took place at the Best Western Brantford Hotel and Conference Centre, saw a diverse group of individuals and teams being honored for their achievements and contributions to the sports scene in Brantford.
Among the recipients was 17-year-old swimmer, Emily Overholt, who was named the Female Athlete of the Year. Overholt, who hails from West Brant, has had a remarkable year, winning multiple medals at the 2019 Pan American Games and setting a new Canadian record in the 400-metre individual medley.
On the male side, 18-year-old hockey player, Connor McMichael, took home the Male Athlete of the Year award. McMichael, who plays for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, was also a member of the gold medal-winning Canadian team at the 2020 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
The Coach of the Year award went to Brantford native, Dave Levac, who has been coaching the Brantford Collegiate Institute’s senior boys’ basketball team for over 20 years. Levac’s dedication and leadership have led the team to numerous championships and have inspired many young athletes in the community.
In addition to recognizing individual achievements, the Brantford Sports Council also presented awards to various teams and organizations. The Brantford Red Sox, a local baseball team, was named Team of the Year for their successful season, which saw them win the Intercounty Baseball League championship.
The Brantford Minor Hockey Association was also recognized for their commitment to promoting and developing the sport of hockey in the community. They received the Organization of the Year award for their efforts in providing a positive and inclusive environment for young athletes.
The Brantford Sports Council also took the opportunity to honor two individuals with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Long-time volunteer and coach, Bob Foster, and former Brantford Expositor sports editor, Bill Smith, were both recognized for their significant contributions to the local sports community.
The awards ceremony was a testament to the talent and dedication of the athletes, coaches, and organizations in Brantford. It highlighted the importance of sports in bringing the community together and inspiring future generations.
As the evening came to a close, it was clear that the Brantford Sports Council’s mission to promote and celebrate sports in the community was being fulfilled. The event was a true celebration of the power of sports and the individuals who make it all possible.
