A Canadian pilot, who bravely exposed a drug trafficking operation in the Dominican Republic, is now taking legal action against the federal government and Pivot Airlines.
Captain Hugh Wood, a former pilot for Pivot Airlines, filed a lawsuit against the company and the Canadian government for allegedly failing to protect him after he reported suspicious activities during his flights to the Dominican Republic.
According to the lawsuit, Wood had noticed unusual behavior from some passengers on his flights, including carrying large amounts of cash and making frequent trips to the Dominican Republic. He reported his concerns to Pivot Airlines and the Canadian government, but claims that no action was taken to investigate the matter.
Wood’s suspicions were later confirmed when he was approached by authorities in the Dominican Republic, who informed him that his flights were being used to transport drugs. He cooperated with the authorities and provided evidence, leading to the arrest of several individuals involved in the drug trafficking operation.
Despite his bravery and cooperation, Wood claims that he faced retaliation from Pivot Airlines and the Canadian government. He was fired from his job and his pilot’s license was suspended, leaving him unable to work in his field.
Wood’s lawyer, David McNairn, stated that his client’s actions should have been protected under the Canadian Aviation Regulations, which require airlines to report any suspicious activities to Transport Canada. McNairn also argues that the Canadian government failed to provide adequate protection for Wood, despite being aware of the risks involved in reporting such activities.
The lawsuit is seeking damages for lost income, damage to Wood’s reputation, and emotional distress. It also calls for changes to be made to the Canadian Aviation Regulations to better protect whistleblowers in the future.
Wood’s courageous actions shed light on the serious issue of drug trafficking and the need for stronger measures to combat it. It is imperative that individuals who come forward with information are protected and supported, rather than facing retaliation.
The federal government and Pivot Airlines have yet to respond to the lawsuit. However, it is clear that Wood’s bravery and determination to do the right thing should be commended, rather than punished.
