Community parade to celebrate Green Shirt Day gets underway at 10 a.m. in Calgary

The city of Calgary is gearing up for a special event to honor the legacy of a young hockey player who tragically lost his life. The community parade, known as Green Shirt Day, will take place at 10 a.m. and is expected to draw a large crowd.

Green Shirt Day is a national movement that was inspired by the story of Logan Boulet, a 21-year-old hockey player who was one of the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018. Boulet had made the selfless decision to become an organ donor just weeks before the accident, and his organs ended up saving six lives.

Since then, Green Shirt Day has been celebrated on April 7th every year to raise awareness about organ donation and to honor Boulet’s legacy. This year, the parade will start at the Genesis Centre and make its way through the community, ending at the Logan Boulet Arena.

The event is expected to be a heartwarming and emotional tribute to Boulet and all organ donors. Participants are encouraged to wear green shirts and bring signs and banners to show their support for the cause. The parade will also feature speeches from organ donation advocates and Boulet’s family members.

Organizers of the event are hoping to spread the message that one organ donor can save up to eight lives, and encourage more people to register as donors. According to Alberta Health Services, there are currently over 4,500 people in the province waiting for organ transplants.

Green Shirt Day is not only a celebration of Boulet’s life, but also a reminder of the impact that one person can have on the lives of others. It serves as a powerful reminder to have conversations with loved ones about organ donation and to consider registering as a donor.

The community parade is just one of the many events happening across the country to mark Green Shirt Day. It is a testament to the strong sense of community in Calgary and the determination to honor Boulet’s legacy in a meaningful way.

As the clock ticks closer to 10 a.m., the excitement and anticipation for the parade continue to build. The city of Calgary is ready to come together and celebrate the life of a young man who continues to inspire and make a difference even after his passing.
