Hair straightener the cause of one of two fires in Winnipeg Saturday night

A hair straightener has been identified as the cause of one of two fires that occurred in Winnipeg on Saturday night.

According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS), the first fire broke out at a residence on the 100 block of Bannerman Avenue around 8:30 p.m. The fire was contained to the second floor of the home and was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

However, a second fire was reported just an hour later at a home on the 400 block of Maryland Street. The WFPS determined that the cause of this fire was a hair straightener left on a bed.

Fortunately, no one was injured in either of the fires. However, the WFPS is reminding the public to always unplug and properly store any heated styling tools when not in use.

The WFPS also urges residents to regularly check their smoke alarms and have a fire escape plan in place in case of emergencies.

These two incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the potential dangers of leaving heated styling tools unattended. Let us all take the necessary precautions to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
