'It's bonkers': Edmonton MP reacts to Smith's plan to veto federal-municipal deals

Edmonton MP, Randy Boissonnault, expressed his disbelief and concern over Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole’s plan to give provincial governments the power to veto federal municipal deals.

Boissonnault described the proposal as “bonkers” and stated that it would undermine the relationship between the federal government and municipalities.

O’Toole’s plan, known as the “New Deal for Cities and Communities,” would allow provincial governments to veto any federal agreements made with municipalities. This includes deals related to infrastructure, housing, and public transit.

Boissonnault argued that this plan would create unnecessary barriers and delays in providing much-needed support and funding to cities and communities. He also pointed out that municipalities are already struggling with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and cannot afford any further setbacks.

The MP also expressed concern over the lack of consultation with municipalities and the potential for this plan to be used for political gain by provincial governments.

In response to O’Toole’s plan, Boissonnault called for a collaborative approach between all levels of government to address the needs of cities and communities. He emphasized the importance of working together to support economic recovery and build a more resilient and inclusive society.

The proposal has also been met with criticism from other municipal leaders, including Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson, who stated that it would create uncertainty and hinder progress.

As the debate over O’Toole’s plan continues, Boissonnault urged for a focus on finding solutions rather than creating roadblocks. He emphasized the need for a strong partnership between the federal government and municipalities to effectively address the challenges facing Canadians.
