A man has been charged after allegedly using an envelope filled with paper in a Facebook Marketplace transaction.

According to police, the incident occurred on February 25 when the victim met with the suspect to purchase a cell phone that was advertised on Facebook Marketplace. The victim handed over $500 in cash to the suspect, who then handed over an envelope in return.

However, upon further inspection, the victim discovered that the envelope was filled with paper instead of the promised cell phone. The victim immediately contacted the police and reported the incident.

After an investigation, 26-year-old John Smith was arrested and charged with one count of fraud under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 15.

Police are reminding the public to exercise caution when making online purchases and to always inspect the item before handing over any money. They also advise using a secure payment method, such as PayPal, to protect against potential fraud.

This incident serves as a reminder to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The police are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the community and will continue to investigate any reported incidents.
