The University of British Columbia (UBC) is set to expand its technology program with the addition of 778 new seats, thanks to a $21 million investment from the provincial government.
The announcement was made by Advanced Education Minister Anne Kang on Tuesday, who stated that the funding will support the growing demand for technology-related programs at UBC.
According to Kang, the investment will help UBC “meet the needs of students and employers in the technology sector, while also supporting the province’s economic recovery.”
The new seats will be added to UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, with 500 seats dedicated to undergraduate programs and 278 seats for graduate programs.
UBC President Santa Ono expressed his gratitude for the investment, stating that it will allow the university to “continue to attract top talent and provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving technology industry.”
The expansion of technology programs at UBC is expected to have a positive impact on the province’s economy, as the demand for skilled workers in the technology sector continues to grow.
In addition to the new seats, the provincial government has also committed to investing $1.5 million in scholarships for students in technology programs at UBC.
The funding is part of the government’s commitment to invest $2 billion in post-secondary education and training over the next three years.
UBC’s expansion of technology programs is a step towards meeting the growing demand for skilled workers in the technology sector, and the investment from the provincial government will undoubtedly have a positive impact on both the university and the province’s economy.
