Three police officers from Abbotsford, British Columbia may face charges after a fatal police pursuit, according to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).
The incident occurred on October 18, 2020, when Abbotsford Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. The officers pursued the vehicle, which eventually collided with a civilian vehicle, resulting in the death of the driver.
The IIO, which is responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in serious harm or death, has been conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the IIO announced that they have completed their investigation and have forwarded a report to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges against the three officers involved.
The IIO did not disclose the specific charges that may be recommended, but stated that they are related to the actions of the officers during the pursuit.
The IIO also noted that their investigation was complex and involved multiple witnesses, video footage, and forensic analysis.
The BC Prosecution Service will now review the report and determine if charges should be laid against the officers. If charges are approved, the officers will be served with a summons to appear in court.
The IIO has also stated that they will not be releasing any further information about the investigation at this time, in order to protect the integrity of the legal process.
This incident has sparked a larger conversation about police pursuits and the potential risks involved. The IIO has stated that they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
The Abbotsford Police Department has also released a statement expressing their condolences to the family of the victim and stating that they will fully cooperate with the legal process.
As the investigation continues, the community of Abbotsford and the rest of British Columbia will be eagerly awaiting the decision of the BC Prosecution Service and the potential outcome for the three officers involved.
