Western Forest Products 'indefinitely curtails' Port Alberni mill

Western Forest Products, one of the largest lumber producers in British Columbia, has announced the indefinite curtailment of its Port Alberni mill. This decision comes as a result of ongoing challenges in the coastal forestry industry, including high costs and low market demand.

The Port Alberni mill, which employs approximately 70 workers, will be shut down indefinitely starting in mid-March. This news has caused concern and uncertainty for both employees and the local community, as the mill has been a significant source of employment and economic activity in the area for decades.

In a statement, Western Forest Products cited the ongoing challenges in the coastal forestry industry as the reason for the curtailment. These challenges include high stumpage fees, which are the fees companies pay to harvest timber on Crown land, as well as the ongoing softwood lumber dispute with the United States.

The company also noted the low market demand for lumber, which has been impacted by a decrease in housing starts in the United States and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This has resulted in a decrease in demand for lumber products, leading to a surplus in the market.

The curtailment of the Port Alberni mill is just the latest in a series of challenges faced by Western Forest Products. In 2019, the company announced the indefinite closure of its Ladysmith sawmill, citing similar challenges in the coastal forestry industry.

The United Steelworkers Local 1-1937, which represents workers at the Port Alberni mill, expressed disappointment and concern over the curtailment. In a statement, the union called on the provincial government to take action to support the coastal forestry industry and protect jobs in the region.

The provincial government has acknowledged the challenges facing the coastal forestry industry and has committed to working with all stakeholders to find solutions. In a statement, Premier John Horgan stated that the government is committed to supporting workers and communities affected by the curtailment.

The indefinite curtailment of the Port Alberni mill is a significant blow to the local community and the coastal forestry industry. As the situation continues to evolve, it is clear that more needs to be done to support this vital sector and the workers who depend on it.
