Construction on a new cancer centre in Nanaimo is set to begin next year, bringing much-needed support and resources to the community.
The project, which has been in the works for several years, was officially announced by the provincial government on Tuesday. The centre will be located on the grounds of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and is expected to be completed by 2024.
According to Health Minister Adrian Dix, the new centre will provide comprehensive cancer care services, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and supportive care. This will greatly benefit patients who currently have to travel to Victoria or Vancouver for treatment.
The centre will also feature a state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner, which will allow for more accurate and timely cancer diagnoses. This technology is currently not available in Nanaimo and patients have had to travel to other cities for this crucial test.
In addition to providing essential medical services, the new cancer centre will also have a focus on patient comfort and well-being. It will include a healing garden, a patient and family resource centre, and a wellness centre for complementary therapies.
The project is estimated to cost $156 million, with the majority of funding coming from the provincial government. The Nanaimo Regional Hospital District will also contribute $40 million towards the construction.
Local officials and community members have expressed their excitement and gratitude for the new cancer centre. Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog stated that the centre will be a “game-changer” for the city and surrounding areas.
The construction of the Nanaimo cancer centre is a significant step towards improving cancer care in the region. It will not only provide much-needed medical services, but also bring hope and support to those affected by this disease.
