Paramedics make up the majority of the “Sunshine List” for the County of Brant, according to the latest report released by the provincial government.
The “Sunshine List” is an annual report that discloses the salaries of public sector employees in Ontario who earn over $100,000 per year. This year’s report, released on March 19, revealed that 44 out of the 50 highest paid employees in the County of Brant are paramedics.
The top earner on the list is the county’s chief paramedic, who earned a salary of $175,000 in 2020. This is followed by 43 other paramedics who earned between $100,000 and $150,000.
The remaining six spots on the list are occupied by two firefighters, two police officers, and two county employees.
The high number of paramedics on the “Sunshine List” can be attributed to the county’s decision to merge its paramedic services with the City of Brantford in 2019. This resulted in a significant increase in salaries for paramedics, as they now fall under the City of Brantford’s pay scale.
According to the County of Brant’s chief administrative officer, Brian Hutchings, the decision to merge paramedic services was made in order to improve response times and provide better service to residents.
Hutchings also noted that the salaries of paramedics are in line with the industry standard and are necessary to attract and retain highly skilled and experienced paramedics.
The County of Brant currently has 60 full-time paramedics and 20 part-time paramedics, who provide emergency medical services to over 40,000 residents.
In response to the release of the “Sunshine List,” the County of Brant’s mayor, David Bailey, stated that the salaries of paramedics are a reflection of the important and life-saving work they do every day.
Bailey also emphasized that the county is committed to providing its residents with the best possible emergency medical services and will continue to support and invest in its paramedic services.
