Calgary man accused in toddler death released on bail

A Calgary man accused of causing the death of a toddler has been released on bail.

According to court documents, 27-year-old John Smith was charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death in connection with the death of a two-year-old child.

The incident occurred on January 15, when emergency services were called to a residence in the community of Bridlewood. The child was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith was arrested and charged the following day. He appeared in court on January 18 and was granted bail with strict conditions.

The conditions of his release include a curfew, a ban on possessing firearms, and a requirement to report to a bail supervisor. He is also not allowed to have any contact with the victim’s family.

The Crown prosecutor argued against Smith’s release, stating that he poses a risk to the public and may interfere with the ongoing investigation. However, the judge ultimately decided to grant bail, citing the lack of a criminal record and the fact that Smith has a stable job and a supportive family.

The case is set to return to court on February 22, where Smith will enter a plea. In the meantime, he is not allowed to be within 100 meters of any playgrounds, schools, or other places where children under the age of 16 may be present.

The death of the toddler has shocked and saddened the community, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Calgary Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
