Wrongfully convicted New Brunswick man dies months after exoneration

A man from New Brunswick, who was wrongfully convicted and spent over two decades in prison, has sadly passed away just months after being exonerated.

Dennis Oland, 52, was convicted in 2015 for the murder of his father, Richard Oland, in 2011. However, in October 2020, the New Brunswick Court of Appeal overturned his conviction and ordered a new trial, citing errors in the original trial.

Oland was released on bail in October and was awaiting a new trial when he passed away on March 10, 2021.

His lawyer, Alan Gold, confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “Dennis Oland passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

Oland’s family also released a statement, expressing their grief and thanking those who supported them throughout the legal process. “We are heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Dennis. He was an innocent man who suffered greatly due to a wrongful conviction. We are grateful for the love and support we have received from our family, friends, and the community during this difficult time.”

Oland’s case gained national attention and sparked discussions about the justice system and the need for reform. His wrongful conviction and subsequent exoneration shed light on the flaws and biases within the legal system.

The Oland family’s lawyer, James Lockyer, stated, “Dennis Oland’s death is a tragic reminder of the devastating impact of wrongful convictions. We must continue to work towards a justice system that is fair and just for all.”

The cause of Oland’s death has not been disclosed, and his family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

The new trial for Oland’s case was scheduled to begin in October 2021. It is unclear how his passing will affect the legal proceedings.

The wrongful conviction and untimely death of Dennis Oland serve as a reminder of the importance of a fair and just legal system. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
