Calgary's CTrain crime the focus of crackdown, 64 charges laid

Calgary’s CTrain system has been a hot topic of discussion lately, with concerns about crime and safety on the public transit system. In response, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) has launched a crackdown on CTrain crime, resulting in 64 charges being laid.

According to CPS, the majority of the charges are related to theft, with 35 charges being laid for theft under $5,000 and 10 charges for theft over $5,000. Other charges include possession of stolen property, fraud, and drug-related offenses.

The crackdown, which began in February, has involved increased patrols and surveillance on the CTrain system. CPS has also been working closely with Calgary Transit to identify and address areas of concern.

In a statement, CPS Chief Mark Neufeld emphasized the importance of public safety on the CTrain system. “We want Calgarians to feel safe and secure while using public transit,” he said. “We will continue to work closely with Calgary Transit to ensure that the CTrain remains a safe and reliable mode of transportation for our citizens.”

Calgary Transit has also taken steps to improve safety on the CTrain, including the installation of CCTV cameras on all trains and platforms. They have also implemented a new safety app, which allows riders to report incidents directly to Calgary Transit’s security team.

In addition to the crackdown on CTrain crime, CPS has also been working to address other issues on the transit system, such as fare evasion and disorderly conduct. So far this year, 1,200 tickets have been issued for fare evasion and 200 for disorderly conduct.

While the crackdown has resulted in a significant number of charges being laid, CPS acknowledges that there is still work to be done to ensure the safety of CTrain riders. They encourage anyone who witnesses a crime or suspicious activity on the CTrain to report it to Calgary Transit’s security team or call 911 in case of an emergency.

As the crackdown on CTrain crime continues, CPS and Calgary Transit are committed to working together to make the public transit system a safe and reliable option for all Calgarians.
