An inmate at the Toronto South Detention Centre has been charged in connection with the death of another inmate who was assaulted on Monday.
According to police, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. in a common area of the facility. The victim, a 32-year-old man, was found with serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The accused, a 29-year-old man, has been identified as a fellow inmate at the detention centre. He has been charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
The Toronto South Detention Centre is a maximum-security facility located in Etobicoke. It houses both male and female inmates and has a capacity of 1,650.
This is not the first time that violence has erupted at the detention centre. In 2019, a 24-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell after an altercation with another inmate. The incident sparked calls for better safety measures and increased staffing at the facility.
The Ministry of the Solicitor General, which oversees the province’s correctional facilities, has released a statement expressing their condolences to the victim’s family and stating that they are working closely with police to investigate the incident.
The Toronto South Detention Centre has faced criticism in the past for its overcrowding and understaffing issues. In 2018, a report by the Ontario Ombudsman found that the facility was operating at 135% capacity and had a shortage of correctional officers.
The investigation into the latest incident is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact police. The victim’s identity has not been released at this time.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by both inmates and staff in correctional facilities. It also highlights the need for proper resources and measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within these institutions.
