Officer convicted of on-duty rape no longer with Royal Newfoundland Constabulary

A former officer of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) who was convicted of on-duty rape is no longer employed by the police force.

The RNC confirmed that Const. Carl Douglas Snelgrove is no longer a member of the force, but did not provide any further details on the circumstances of his departure.

Snelgrove was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman while on duty in 2014. He was sentenced to four years in prison in 2018, but was released on bail pending an appeal.

The appeal was dismissed in February of this year, and Snelgrove was ordered to turn himself in to begin serving his sentence.

The RNC had initially suspended Snelgrove with pay following his conviction, but he was later suspended without pay after the appeal was dismissed.

In a statement, the RNC said they are committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity within their organization.

“The RNC is committed to ensuring that all members are held accountable for their actions and that the public’s trust in our organization is maintained,” the statement read.

The RNC also stated that they have implemented a number of measures to prevent and address sexual harassment and assault within the force, including mandatory training for all members.

The victim in this case, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, has been vocal about her disappointment with the RNC’s handling of the situation.

In an interview with CTV News, she expressed her frustration with the delays in the case and the lack of support she received from the RNC.

“I feel like I’ve been let down by the system,” she said.

The victim also called for more accountability and transparency within the RNC, stating that she hopes this case will lead to positive changes within the force.

With Snelgrove no longer employed by the RNC, the victim can finally have some closure and begin to move on from this traumatic experience.

The RNC’s decision to terminate Snelgrove’s employment sends a strong message that sexual misconduct will not be tolerated within their organization.

It is now up to the RNC to continue to work towards creating a safe and respectful workplace for all members and to restore the public’s trust in their organization.
