The Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) has recently launched a campaign to expand and renew its facility in hopes of reaching a wider audience and providing a better experience for its patrons.
The campaign, titled “Hitting Our Mark,” aims to raise $2.5 million to fund the renovation and expansion of MTYP’s current building. The project will include a new 200-seat theatre, a larger lobby and box office, and improved accessibility features.
According to MTYP’s Artistic Director, Pablo Felices-Luna, the current facility has limitations that prevent the theatre from fully realizing its potential. “We have been operating at full capacity for years, and we have had to turn away many schools and community groups due to lack of space,” Felices-Luna stated.
The new theatre will allow MTYP to accommodate larger productions and attract bigger audiences, while the expanded lobby and box office will improve the overall experience for patrons. The addition of accessibility features, such as an elevator and wheelchair ramps, will also make the theatre more inclusive for individuals with disabilities.
MTYP has already received a significant donation of $500,000 from the Richardson Foundation, which has been a long-time supporter of the theatre. The remaining funds will be raised through donations from the community, as well as grants and sponsorships.
The campaign has already gained support from various community leaders, including Mayor Brian Bowman, who believes that the expansion and renewal of MTYP’s facility will have a positive impact on the city’s cultural scene.
MTYP has been a staple in the Winnipeg arts community for over 35 years, providing quality theatre experiences for young audiences. With the “Hitting Our Mark” campaign, the theatre hopes to continue its mission of inspiring and educating young minds through the power of theatre.
The campaign is set to run until the end of 2021, with construction expected to begin in early 2022. MTYP is confident that with the support of the community, the project will be a success and will allow the theatre to continue to thrive for years to come.
