Vancouver bans sale of some butane lighters

Vancouver has taken a significant step towards fire safety by banning the sale of certain types of butane lighters. The decision was made by the city council in response to concerns about the potential dangers of these lighters.

The ban, which went into effect on April 1st, prohibits the sale of lighters that have a flame height of more than 1.5 centimeters or a flame temperature of over 1,000 degrees Celsius. These types of lighters are often referred to as “torch” or “jet” lighters and are commonly used for lighting cigarettes, cigars, and candles.

According to the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, these types of lighters have been responsible for numerous fires and injuries in the city. In fact, in 2020 alone, there were 23 fires caused by butane lighters, resulting in over $1 million in property damage.

The ban was proposed by Vancouver City Councillor Pete Fry, who stated that these lighters pose a significant risk to public safety. He also noted that the ban aligns with the city’s goal of reducing fire-related incidents and promoting fire safety.

While some may argue that this ban infringes on personal freedom and choice, the city council believes that the potential risks outweigh the benefits of using these types of lighters. In addition, there are still plenty of alternative lighters available for purchase that do not pose the same level of danger.

Retailers who continue to sell these banned lighters could face fines of up to $10,000. However, the city council has stated that they will be focusing on education and awareness rather than strict enforcement in the initial stages of the ban.

This move by Vancouver follows in the footsteps of other cities, such as New York and Chicago, who have also implemented similar bans on certain types of butane lighters. It is a proactive step towards promoting fire safety and protecting the well-being of the community.

In conclusion, the ban on the sale of certain butane lighters in Vancouver is a necessary measure to prevent potential fires and injuries. It is a responsible decision by the city council to prioritize public safety and reduce the risk of fire-related incidents.
