A bear attack on a popular trail in Squamish has resulted in its closure, leaving hikers and outdoor enthusiasts concerned for their safety.
According to officials, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon on the Brohm Lake Interpretive Forest trail. A group of hikers encountered a black bear and her cubs, resulting in a defensive attack by the mother bear.
The hikers were able to escape and call for help, but not before sustaining injuries. One person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the others were treated on site.
Conservation officers were immediately dispatched to the area and were able to locate the bear and her cubs. The mother bear was euthanized due to the severity of the attack and the potential danger she posed to other hikers.
As a precautionary measure, the Brohm Lake Interpretive Forest trail has been closed until further notice. Officials are urging the public to avoid the area and to be cautious when hiking in bear country.
This is not the first bear attack to occur in Squamish this year. In May, a woman was attacked by a black bear while walking her dog on a trail near Alice Lake. She sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.
Conservation officers are reminding the public to always be aware of their surroundings and to take necessary precautions when hiking in bear country. This includes making noise, traveling in groups, and carrying bear spray.
The closure of the Brohm Lake Interpretive Forest trail serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife and their habitats. Officials are working to ensure the safety of both humans and bears in the area.
For updates on the status of the trail closure, hikers are advised to check the District of Squamish website or social media channels.
