The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has announced plans to increase its submarine presence in the North Atlantic, according to a statement made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday.

This decision comes as part of NATO’s efforts to strengthen its defense and deterrence capabilities in the face of growing security challenges, particularly from Russia.

In a virtual press conference, Stoltenberg stated that NATO will be expanding its submarine operations in the North Atlantic, with a focus on the High North region. This will include increasing the number of submarines, as well as conducting more exercises and patrols in the area.

The move is seen as a response to Russia’s increased submarine activity in the region, which has raised concerns among NATO allies. Stoltenberg emphasized that NATO’s actions are purely defensive and in line with international law.

NATO’s decision has been welcomed by member countries, including Canada. Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan expressed his support for the increased submarine presence, stating that it will contribute to the security of the North Atlantic and the Arctic.

This announcement also comes as NATO prepares for its upcoming summit in Brussels on June 14, where leaders will discuss the alliance’s future strategy and priorities.

In addition to the submarine plans, Stoltenberg also announced that NATO will be establishing a new Atlantic Command in Norfolk, Virginia, to oversee the alliance’s operations in the North Atlantic.

The increased submarine presence in the North Atlantic is just one aspect of NATO’s efforts to adapt to the changing security landscape. The alliance has also been increasing its presence in the Black Sea and the Baltic region, as well as investing in new technologies and capabilities.

Stoltenberg emphasized that NATO remains committed to dialogue and cooperation with Russia, but also stressed the importance of being prepared and vigilant in the face of potential threats.

As NATO continues to evolve and adapt, the increased submarine presence in the North Atlantic is a clear indication of the alliance’s determination to ensure the security and stability of its member countries.
