Police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing after a man was injured during an arrest in Brampton, Ontario. The incident occurred when the man allegedly rammed stolen vans into police cruisers.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the incident took place on March 31, 2021, when officers from the Peel Regional Police were responding to reports of a stolen van in the area of Queen Street East and Bramalea Road. The officers located the van and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to comply and instead rammed into two police cruisers.
The SIU, which is responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault, launched an investigation into the incident. The investigation included interviews with the officers involved, as well as civilian witnesses and the injured man.
After reviewing all the evidence, the SIU has determined that the officers acted lawfully and were justified in their use of force during the arrest. The SIU Director, Joseph Martino, stated that the officers were faced with a dangerous situation and acted in accordance with their training and the law.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital and is facing multiple charges, including dangerous driving and possession of stolen property.
The SIU has concluded its investigation, and the officers involved have been cleared of any wrongdoing. The Peel Regional Police have also conducted an internal review of the incident and have determined that the officers acted in accordance with their policies and procedures.
