Vancouver Canucks assistant coach Rick Tocchet has provided an update on the team’s goaltender Thatcher Demko, stating that he is showing signs of improvement. Tocchet also mentioned that top prospect Eetu Lekkerimaki could be an option for Game 5.
During a recent press conference, Tocchet shared that Demko has been working hard in practice and is making progress in his recovery from a lower-body injury. Demko has been sidelined since April 18th, when he left the game against the Winnipeg Jets after the first period.
Tocchet praised Demko’s work ethic and determination, stating that he is “getting better every day.” However, Tocchet did not provide a timeline for Demko’s return to the lineup.
In the meantime, the Canucks have been relying on Braden Holtby as their starting goaltender. Holtby has played in the last four games, posting a 2-2 record with a .919 save percentage.
Tocchet also mentioned that Lekkerimaki, the Canucks’ 2020 fifth-round draft pick, could potentially make his NHL debut in Game 5 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 20-year-old forward has been playing for the Utica Comets in the AHL this season, recording 10 points in 26 games.
Lekkerimaki has been praised for his speed and offensive abilities, and Tocchet believes he could provide a spark for the Canucks’ struggling offense. However, Tocchet also noted that the decision to play Lekkerimaki will ultimately be up to head coach Travis Green.
The Canucks are currently down 3-1 in their first-round playoff series against the Maple Leafs, with Game 5 set to take place on Thursday night. The team will continue to monitor Demko’s progress and make a decision on his availability closer to game time.
In the meantime, Tocchet and the Canucks remain focused on the task at hand and are determined to fight their way back into the series. Fans will have to wait and see if Demko will be able to return to the lineup and if Lekkerimaki will make his NHL debut in Game 5.
