Canadian dog owners brace for stricter rules for entering U.S.

Canadian dog owners are preparing for stricter regulations when it comes to traveling with their furry companions to the United States. The new rules, set to take effect on July 14, 2021, will require all dogs entering the US to have a valid rabies vaccination certificate.

This change comes as a response to the increasing number of cases of rabies in dogs imported from high-risk countries. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified Canada as a low-risk country for rabies, but the new regulations aim to further prevent the spread of the disease.

Under the new rules, all dogs over four months old must have a rabies vaccination certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate must include the dog’s breed, age, sex, color, and markings, as well as the date of the vaccination and the expiration date. The certificate must also include the veterinarian’s signature and contact information.

In addition to the rabies vaccination certificate, dogs entering the US must also have a valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel. This certificate must state that the dog is in good health and has been examined for any signs of infectious diseases.

The stricter regulations have caused concern among Canadian dog owners who frequently travel to the US with their pets. Many are worried about the added cost and inconvenience of obtaining the necessary documents, especially for last-minute trips.

However, the CDC has assured that these measures are necessary to protect both human and animal health. Rabies is a deadly disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected animal. By requiring proof of vaccination, the risk of rabies entering the US is greatly reduced.

Canadian dog owners are advised to plan ahead and ensure that their pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations before traveling to the US. Failure to comply with the new regulations may result in the dog being denied entry or even being quarantined at the owner’s expense.

The new rules apply to all dogs entering the US, including those traveling by air, land, or sea. The only exception is for dogs entering the US from Canada for less than 30 days, as long as they have not been in any other country during that time.

As the July 14 deadline approaches, Canadian dog owners are urged to familiarize themselves with the new regulations and take the necessary steps to ensure a smooth and safe journey for their furry companions. More information can be found on the CDC’s website or by contacting the US Customs and Border Protection agency.
