A new film set in Montreal is shedding light on the troubled life of a young boy who survived a devastating hurricane.
The film, titled “L’Ouragan,” tells the story of 10-year-old Maxime, who was orphaned after Hurricane Maria hit his home in Puerto Rico. Maxime is then sent to live with his aunt in Montreal, where he struggles to adapt to his new life.
Director Jean-François Pouliot says the film is a powerful and emotional journey that explores the effects of trauma on a young child.
“Maxime’s story is one of resilience and hope, but it also highlights the challenges that many children face when they are forced to leave their homes and start over in a new place,” Pouliot said.
The film’s lead actor, 12-year-old newcomer Maxime Desjardins-Tremblay, says he was drawn to the role because of the character’s strength and determination.
“Maxime is a survivor, and I wanted to do justice to his story and bring his struggles to life on screen,” Desjardins-Tremblay said.
The film also features well-known actors such as Céline Bonnier and Antoine Olivier Pilon, who play Maxime’s aunt and uncle, respectively.
Pouliot says filming in Montreal was important to accurately portray the city’s diverse and multicultural community.
“Montreal is a city of immigrants, and we wanted to showcase that in the film. Maxime’s story is just one example of the many stories of resilience and perseverance that exist in our city,” Pouliot said.
The film has already received critical acclaim, winning the Audience Award at the 2021 Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma festival.
“L’Ouragan” is set to be released in theaters across Quebec on May 7th. It is a poignant and timely reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of empathy and understanding in the face of adversity.
