Sarnia’s Ineos plant has been ordered to appeal a provincial order to reduce its emissions by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
The ministry issued the order in response to complaints from residents about the plant’s emissions, which they say have been causing health issues and environmental damage.
Ineos, a petrochemical company, has been operating in Sarnia for over 70 years and is one of the largest employers in the area. The company has stated that it has been working to reduce its emissions and has invested millions of dollars in environmental upgrades.
However, the ministry’s order requires Ineos to reduce its emissions by 45 per cent within six months, which the company says is not feasible. Ineos has filed an appeal with the Environmental Review Tribunal, arguing that the order is unreasonable and will have a significant impact on its operations.
The appeal process could take up to a year, during which time Ineos will continue to operate under the current emissions levels. The company has also stated that it will continue to work with the ministry to find a solution that is both environmentally responsible and economically feasible.
Residents in the area have expressed frustration and concern over the ongoing emissions from the Ineos plant. Some have even called for the plant to be shut down permanently.
The ministry has stated that it is committed to protecting the health and well-being of the community and will continue to monitor the situation closely. It has also encouraged Ineos to work towards finding a solution that meets both environmental and economic needs.
This appeal is just the latest development in the ongoing battle between Ineos and the community over emissions. It remains to be seen how the Environmental Review Tribunal will rule and what the future holds for the Ineos plant in Sarnia.
