An off-duty paramedic has been recognized for his heroic actions after rescuing an injured police officer during a snowstorm.
On February 16, 2021, paramedic Ryan Smith was driving home from work when he came across an accident on the side of the road. He immediately pulled over and rushed to the scene to offer his assistance.
To his surprise, he discovered that the injured individual was a police officer who had been involved in a collision while responding to a call. The officer had sustained serious injuries and was in need of immediate medical attention.
Without hesitation, Smith sprang into action and began treating the officer’s injuries. Despite the treacherous weather conditions, he was able to stabilize the officer and keep him warm until an ambulance arrived.
Thanks to Smith’s quick thinking and medical expertise, the injured officer was able to make a full recovery.
For his selfless and courageous actions, Smith was recently honored by the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs with the Award of Excellence. This award recognizes paramedics who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to save lives.
In a statement, Smith humbly accepted the award and credited his training and experience for preparing him to handle such a challenging situation.
“I am grateful for the recognition, but I was just doing my job as a paramedic,” Smith said. “I am proud to be a part of a team that is dedicated to helping others, no matter the circumstances.”
Smith’s heroic act serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of paramedics, who put their lives on the line every day to save others.
We commend Smith for his bravery and selflessness, and we thank all paramedics for their unwavering commitment to serving their communities.
