A grassfire that broke out south of Calgary’s Calaway Park on Sunday afternoon has caused the popular amusement park to close early.
According to officials, the fire started around 3:30 p.m. and quickly spread due to strong winds. The park, which was open for its first weekend of the season, was forced to shut down at 4:30 p.m. as a precautionary measure.
Fire crews from Rocky View County and the City of Calgary were called to the scene to battle the blaze. They were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to any structures or rides within the park.
No injuries were reported and all guests and staff were safely evacuated from the park. However, due to the fire and resulting smoke, some guests experienced respiratory issues and were treated by EMS on site.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it may have been sparked by a discarded cigarette or a hot car exhaust.
Calaway Park released a statement on their website, apologizing for the early closure and assuring guests that the park will be open as usual on Monday.
“We are grateful for the quick response of the fire crews and the safety of our guests and staff is our top priority,” the statement read.
The park also thanked guests for their understanding and cooperation during the evacuation process.
As of Monday morning, the fire is under control and crews are monitoring the area for any potential hot spots.
Calaway Park is a popular destination for families and thrill-seekers, offering over 30 rides and attractions. It has been in operation since 1982 and is the largest outdoor amusement park in Western Canada.
Officials are reminding the public to be cautious and responsible when disposing of cigarettes or using vehicles in grassy areas, especially during dry and windy conditions.
The park is expected to resume its regular operating hours on Monday and guests are advised to check the park’s website for any updates.
