Port Moody police officer may have committed offences in crash with motorcycle: IIO

A Port Moody police officer is under investigation for potentially committing offences in a crash involving a motorcycle, according to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

The incident occurred on April 25, when the officer was responding to a call and collided with a motorcycle at the intersection of St. Johns Street and Queens Street. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The IIO, which is responsible for investigating all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, has determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe the officer may have committed offences in relation to the crash.

The IIO has not specified what offences the officer may have committed, but they have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that the officer has been notified of their status as a subject officer.

The Port Moody Police Department has also been made aware of the investigation and is cooperating with the IIO.

This is not the first time the Port Moody Police Department has been under scrutiny by the IIO. In 2019, an officer was charged with assault causing bodily harm in relation to an incident that occurred in 2017.

The IIO is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information about the incident to contact them at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO is an independent civilian oversight agency that conducts thorough and impartial investigations into police-related incidents in British Columbia. Their goal is to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of these incidents.

The investigation into this crash is ongoing and the IIO will provide updates as they become available.
