A tragic incident in West Kelowna has left a dog dead and a woman injured after being attacked by a deer.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the incident occurred on Monday evening in the Shannon Lake area. The woman was walking her dog when they were approached by a deer. The deer then proceeded to attack the dog, causing fatal injuries.
The woman attempted to intervene and was also attacked by the deer. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The RCMP and the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service were called to the scene and were able to locate and euthanize the deer. They believe the deer was acting aggressively due to being in rutting season.
This incident serves as a reminder to the public to be cautious and aware of their surroundings, especially during rutting season when deer may exhibit more aggressive behavior.
The Conservation Officer Service also reminds the public to never approach or feed wild animals, as it can lead to dangerous situations for both humans and animals.
The RCMP and the Conservation Officer Service are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Our thoughts go out to the woman who was injured and the family of the dog who tragically lost their beloved pet. We urge the public to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions when encountering wild animals.
