Manitoba school board under review, province appoints oversight panel

The Manitoba government has appointed an oversight panel to review a school board in the province, following concerns raised by parents and community members.

The board in question, the River East Transcona School Division, has been under scrutiny for its handling of various issues, including allegations of bullying and a lack of transparency.

Education Minister Cliff Cullen announced the appointment of the oversight panel on Tuesday, stating that the government is committed to ensuring the well-being and success of students in the province.

The panel will be led by former Manitoba deputy minister of education Gerald Farthing, and will also include former school board trustee Diane Cameron and former school superintendent Dr. Janice MacKinnon.

Their mandate will be to review the governance and operations of the River East Transcona School Division, and to provide recommendations for improvement.

Minister Cullen emphasized that the panel will have the authority to conduct a thorough and independent review, and that their findings and recommendations will be made public.

The decision to appoint an oversight panel comes after months of concerns raised by parents and community members, who have expressed frustration with the school board’s handling of various issues.

In a statement, the River East Transcona School Division said they welcome the review and are committed to working with the panel to address any areas of improvement.

The panel is expected to begin their review in the coming weeks and will provide a report to the government by the end of the year.

This move by the Manitoba government highlights their commitment to ensuring the well-being and success of students in the province, and their willingness to address concerns raised by the community.
