After a lengthy trial, Greg Fertuck has been found guilty of first-degree murder.
The verdict was delivered by a jury on Friday, following weeks of testimony and evidence presented in court.
Fertuck, 67, was charged with the murder of his estranged wife, Sheree Fertuck, who went missing in December 2015. Her body has never been found.
The Crown argued that Fertuck killed his wife in a fit of rage after she threatened to expose his financial crimes. They presented evidence of Fertuck’s financial troubles and his attempts to cover them up.
The defense, however, maintained that there was no concrete evidence linking Fertuck to his wife’s disappearance and that the Crown’s case was based on speculation.
In the end, the jury sided with the Crown and found Fertuck guilty of first-degree murder.
The verdict was met with mixed emotions from both the Fertuck and the victim’s families. While Sheree’s family expressed relief and closure, Fertuck’s family was visibly upset and maintained his innocence.
The judge has yet to set a date for sentencing, but Fertuck is facing an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
This case has been closely followed by the community, as Sheree’s disappearance and the subsequent trial have been a source of shock and sadness.
The Fertuck family has released a statement thanking the police and the Crown for their efforts in bringing justice for Sheree.
As the trial comes to a close, the community can only hope that this verdict brings some closure to the family and loved ones of Sheree Fertuck.
