Monument honouring 17 lives lost in Carberry bus crash to be unveiled Saturday

A monument dedicated to the 17 lives lost in a tragic bus crash in Carberry, Manitoba will be unveiled this Saturday.

The crash, which occurred on April 6, 2018, involved a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. The team was on their way to a playoff game when the bus collided with a semi-trailer, resulting in the loss of 16 players and staff members, as well as the bus driver.

The monument, located at the Carberry Plains Cemetery, will feature a bronze plaque with the names of the 17 victims. It was designed by local artist, Peter Sawatzky, who was personally affected by the tragedy as his son was a former teammate of some of the players.

The unveiling ceremony will be attended by family members of the victims, as well as community members and dignitaries. The event will also include a moment of silence and a performance by a local choir.

The monument serves as a way to honor and remember those who lost their lives in the crash, and to provide a place for loved ones to grieve and pay their respects. It also serves as a reminder of the impact the tragedy had on the community and the nation as a whole.

The unveiling of the monument comes just over three years after the devastating crash, and serves as a symbol of healing and resilience for the community of Carberry and beyond.

The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, and is open to the public. It is expected to be a somber yet meaningful event, as the community continues to come together to honor and remember those who were lost in the Carberry bus crash.
