Residents in the South Okanagan region are being reminded to properly dispose of animal carcasses and hazardous items after several incidents of improper disposal were reported.
According to the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS), animal carcasses and hazardous items such as needles and chemicals have been found in garbage bins and recycling depots, posing a potential health and safety risk to the community.
The RDOS is urging residents to follow proper disposal guidelines and to not place these items in regular garbage or recycling bins. Instead, they should be taken to designated disposal facilities, such as landfills or transfer stations.
Improper disposal of animal carcasses can attract wildlife and create a potential health hazard for both humans and animals. In addition, hazardous items can contaminate the environment and harm waste management workers.
The RDOS is also reminding residents that it is illegal to dump animal carcasses or hazardous items on public or private property without permission. Those found in violation of these regulations may face fines or other penalties.
To ensure proper disposal, the RDOS recommends that animal carcasses be double-bagged and securely tied before being taken to a designated disposal facility. Hazardous items, such as needles, should be placed in a puncture-proof container and labeled as “biohazard” before being disposed of at a designated facility.
Residents are also encouraged to report any incidents of improper disposal to the RDOS or local authorities.
Proper disposal of animal carcasses and hazardous items is not only a matter of public health and safety, but also a responsibility to protect the environment and the community. Let us all do our part in keeping the South Okanagan region clean and safe for everyone.
