Former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre has officially announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party.
In a statement released on Monday, Coderre confirmed his intentions to run for the position, stating that he believes he has the experience and vision to lead the party to success in the upcoming provincial election.
Coderre, who served as mayor of Montreal from 2013 to 2017, has a long history in politics. He was a member of parliament for the Liberal Party of Canada from 1997 to 2013, and also held various cabinet positions, including Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and Multiculturalism.
In his statement, Coderre highlighted his accomplishments as mayor, including the revitalization of the city’s downtown core, the creation of new public transit projects, and the successful hosting of major international events such as the Formula E race and the World Police and Fire Games.
He also emphasized his commitment to the province of Quebec, stating that he will work tirelessly to promote its interests and ensure its economic prosperity.
Coderre’s decision to run for the Quebec Liberal Party leadership comes after former leader Dominique Anglade stepped down following the party’s disappointing performance in the 2018 provincial election.
The leadership race is expected to be highly competitive, with other potential candidates including former education minister Sébastien Proulx and former health minister Gaétan Barrette.
The Quebec Liberal Party will hold its leadership convention in October, where party members will vote for their new leader.
In the meantime, Coderre will be focusing on building support and outlining his platform, which he says will prioritize job creation, economic growth, and social justice.
With his extensive political experience and strong track record, Coderre’s candidacy is sure to bring a new level of excitement and competition to the Quebec Liberal Party leadership race.
