Police are seeking information after shots were fired at a Richmond Hill elementary school over the weekend.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Saturday evening at around 9:30 p.m. at Silver Pines Public School, located on Silver Linden Drive.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area, followed by the sound of a vehicle speeding away. No injuries were reported.
Police arrived at the scene and found evidence of gunshots, including bullet holes in the school’s windows and exterior walls.
The York Regional Police’s Forensic Identification Unit and Canine Unit were called in to assist with the investigation.
At this time, it is unclear if the school was specifically targeted or if it was a random act of violence. However, police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“We are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact us immediately,” said Constable Laura Nicolle of the York Regional Police.
The school was closed at the time of the incident and there were no students or staff present. The school will remain closed until further notice as the investigation continues.
Parents and community members are understandably concerned about the safety of the school and its students. The York Region District School Board has released a statement assuring the public that they are working closely with the police and taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the school.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7141 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
