Winnipeg Air Force Veteran Honored with Flyover
A special flyover was held in Winnipeg on Saturday to honor a local Air Force veteran, Sergeant (Retired) John Smith. The event was organized by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to recognize Smith’s service and dedication to his country.
Smith, who is now 92 years old, served in the RCAF during World War II and the Korean War. He joined the Air Force in 1943 and was stationed in England, where he flew as a navigator on Lancaster bombers. He also served as a radar technician during the Korean War.
The flyover, which consisted of four CT-155 Hawk jets from 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, flew over Smith’s home in Winnipeg at 1:00 pm. The jets flew in a “missing man” formation, with one jet pulling up and away to symbolize a fallen comrade.
Smith’s family and friends, as well as members of the RCAF and CAF, gathered to watch the flyover and pay their respects to the veteran. Smith’s daughter, Jane, expressed her gratitude for the event, saying, “It’s a wonderful tribute to my father and all the veterans who have served our country.”
Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Adamson, Commanding Officer of 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School, spoke about the significance of honoring veterans like Smith. “It’s important for us to recognize and remember the sacrifices made by those who have served before us,” he said. “We are grateful for their service and we are proud to honor them in this way.”
The flyover was also a reminder of the important role that the RCAF and CAF continue to play in protecting Canada and its citizens. “The RCAF and CAF are committed to serving our country and ensuring the safety and security of all Canadians,” said Lieutenant-General Alain Pelletier, Commander of the RCAF. “We are honored to pay tribute to Sergeant Smith and all those who have served before us.”
The event was a touching and meaningful tribute to a brave and dedicated veteran. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the military and the importance of honoring their service. The RCAF and CAF’s flyover was a fitting tribute to Sergeant Smith and all those who have served their country with honor and courage.
