Vancouver, BC – A group of Emily Carr University students have presented their innovative design proposal for the new St. Paul’s Hospital, which is set to open in 2026.
The students, who are part of the university’s Industrial Design program, were tasked with creating a concept for the hospital’s main lobby and public spaces. Their design, titled “The Healing Garden,” aims to create a welcoming and calming environment for patients and visitors.
The proposal includes a large central garden surrounded by a circular pathway, with seating areas and interactive installations throughout. The garden will feature a variety of plants and trees, as well as a water feature and natural lighting to promote a sense of tranquility.
In addition to the garden, the students have also incorporated sustainable elements into their design. This includes a rainwater collection system to water the plants, as well as solar panels to power the interactive installations.
The students worked closely with St. Paul’s Hospital staff and patients to ensure their design met the needs of the community. They also consulted with experts in healthcare design to ensure the space would be functional and accessible for all.
“We wanted to create a space that not only looks beautiful, but also has a positive impact on the well-being of patients and visitors,” said student designer, Sarah Jones. “We hope that our design will provide a sense of calm and healing for those who enter the hospital.”
The proposal has received positive feedback from both the hospital staff and the public. Dr. John Smith, Chief Medical Officer at St. Paul’s Hospital, praised the students for their thoughtful and innovative approach to healthcare design.
“The Healing Garden concept is a perfect fit for our new hospital,” said Dr. Smith. “It aligns with our mission to provide patient-centered care and create a healing environment for our community.”
The students’ design will now be considered by the hospital’s design team for potential implementation in the new St. Paul’s Hospital. If chosen, the students will have the opportunity to work with the hospital and see their design come to life.
The presentation of the students’ design is a testament to the power of collaboration and the impact of design on healthcare. As the new St. Paul’s Hospital continues to take shape, the community can look forward to a space that not only provides top-notch medical care, but also promotes healing and well-being.
