A Manitoba school division has made the decision to ban cell phones in all of its schools, citing concerns over student distraction and cyberbullying.
The Hanover School Division, located just south of Winnipeg, announced the new policy on Monday, stating that students will no longer be allowed to use their cell phones during school hours, including breaks and lunchtime.
According to the division’s superintendent, Randy Dueck, the decision was made after receiving feedback from parents, teachers, and students. Dueck stated that the majority of the feedback was in favor of the ban, with many expressing concerns over the negative impact of cell phone use on students’ academic performance and social interactions.
The ban will apply to all students from kindergarten to grade 12, and will be enforced starting in the upcoming school year. Students will be required to keep their cell phones turned off and out of sight during school hours, with the exception of emergency situations.
Dueck also addressed concerns about the ban potentially hindering students’ access to technology for educational purposes. He assured that the division will provide alternative devices, such as laptops and tablets, for students to use in the classroom.

The Hanover School Division is not the first to implement a cell phone ban. Other school divisions in Manitoba, as well as provinces like Ontario and Quebec, have also implemented similar policies.
