Canadian equestrian rider Chris von Martels has secured his spot in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, marking his second appearance at the prestigious event.

Von Martels, a native of Ridgetown, Ontario, qualified for the Olympics after a strong performance at the FEI Dressage World Cup Finals in Gothenburg, Sweden. He finished in 10th place overall, earning him one of the coveted spots for the Olympics.

This will be von Martels’ second time representing Canada at the Olympics, having previously competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He will be riding his trusted partner, Eclips, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding.

Von Martels expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the Olympics once again. He stated, “It’s an incredible feeling to know that I will be representing Canada at the Olympics for the second time. I am grateful for the support of my team and the opportunity to compete with Eclips, who has been a fantastic partner.”

The 38-year-old rider has had a successful career in dressage, with numerous national and international titles under his belt. He has also been a member of the Canadian Dressage Team since 2013.

Von Martels’ qualification adds to the growing list of Canadian equestrian athletes who have secured their spots at the Tokyo Olympics. He will be joining fellow dressage riders Lindsay Kellock and Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu, as well as show jumping riders Eric Lamaze and Mario Deslauriers.

The Tokyo Olympics, originally scheduled for 2020, were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The equestrian events will take place from July 24 to August 7, 2021.

Von Martels will continue to train and prepare for the Olympics, with the support of his team and the Canadian equestrian community. His dedication and hard work have earned him a well-deserved spot at the prestigious event, and Canadians will be cheering him on as he competes for a medal in Tokyo.
