A tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at Okanagan Lake in Kelowna, as a man drowned and a dive team was called in to assist with the recovery. According to the Kelowna RCMP, the man was swimming in the lake when he went under and did not resurface.
The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. near the 300 block of Poplar Point Drive. Witnesses reported seeing the man struggling in the water before disappearing. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, including the Kelowna Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, and the RCMP.
Despite the efforts of bystanders who attempted to rescue the man, he was not able to be located. The RCMP dive team was then called in to assist with the search and recovery efforts. After several hours of searching, the man’s body was found and brought to shore.
The identity of the man has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The RCMP is working with the BC Coroners Service to determine the cause of death.
