Most Calgary outdoor public pools are ready to go but restrictions are keeping them closed

Calgary’s outdoor public pools are typically a popular spot for residents to cool off during the hot summer months. However, this year, many of these pools remain closed due to ongoing restrictions.

According to the City of Calgary, most outdoor public pools are ready to open and have undergone necessary maintenance and repairs. This includes the installation of new filtration systems and the hiring of lifeguards. However, the decision to open these pools ultimately lies with the provincial government.

Under current restrictions, outdoor public pools are only allowed to operate at 50% capacity and must adhere to physical distancing guidelines. This has posed a challenge for pool operators, as it is difficult to monitor and enforce these restrictions in a large outdoor space.

In addition, the cost of operating at reduced capacity may not be feasible for some pools. The City of Calgary estimates that it would cost an additional $1 million to open all outdoor public pools this summer, with limited capacity and increased safety measures in place.

Despite these challenges, some outdoor public pools have been able to open with limited capacity. This includes the pool at the Southland Leisure Centre, which has implemented a reservation system to ensure physical distancing guidelines are followed.

The closure of outdoor public pools has been met with disappointment from many Calgarians, who see it as a missed opportunity to enjoy the summer weather and stay active. However, the City of Calgary has stated that the safety and well-being of residents is their top priority, and they will continue to follow provincial guidelines.

In the meantime, residents can still cool off at indoor public pools, which have been allowed to open at 50% capacity since June 14th. The City of Calgary also offers various outdoor water play areas and spray parks for families to enjoy.

As the summer progresses and restrictions continue to ease, it is possible that more outdoor public pools may be able to open. Until then, residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow all safety guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
