An environmental group has made a significant move to protect salmon in British Columbia by purchasing a Fraser River island near Chilliwack.

The island, known as Herrling Island, was bought by the Watershed Watch Salmon Society for $650,000. The society plans to use the island as a sanctuary for salmon, which are facing increasing threats from human activities such as overfishing and habitat destruction.

According to the society’s executive director, Aaron Hill, the island is a crucial habitat for salmon, providing them with a safe place to rest and feed during their migration. He also stated that the island is home to a diverse range of wildlife, making it an important ecological hotspot.

The purchase of Herrling Island was made possible through a partnership with the Real Estate Foundation of BC, which provided a grant of $500,000. The remaining amount was raised through donations from individuals and organizations.

The island, which spans 85 acres, is located in the heart of the Fraser River and is surrounded by prime salmon habitat. It is also situated near the confluence of the Chilliwack and Vedder rivers, which are important spawning grounds for salmon.

The Watershed Watch Salmon Society plans to work with local First Nations and other stakeholders to develop a management plan for the island. This plan will focus on protecting and enhancing the island’s natural habitat, as well as promoting sustainable fishing practices in the surrounding area.

The purchase of Herrling Island is a significant step towards protecting salmon in British Columbia, which have been facing increasing threats in recent years. It is also a testament to the power of collaboration and community support in conservation efforts.

The society hopes that this move will inspire others to take action and protect vital habitats for salmon and other wildlife. With the continued efforts of organizations like the Watershed Watch Salmon Society, there is hope for the future of salmon and the ecosystems they support.
