New Brunswick Health Department Reports Increase in Fentanyl-Related Opioid Deaths
The New Brunswick Health Department has released a concerning report regarding the rise in fentanyl-related opioid deaths in the province. According to the report, there has been a significant increase in the number of deaths caused by fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, in the past year.
The report states that there were 38 confirmed fentanyl-related deaths in 2020, compared to 22 in 2019. This marks a 73% increase in just one year, highlighting the severity of the opioid crisis in New Brunswick.
Dr. Jennifer Russell, the province’s chief medical officer of health, expressed her concern over the alarming trend. She stated that fentanyl is a highly potent and dangerous drug, and even a small amount can be fatal. She also emphasized the need for immediate action to address this issue and prevent further loss of life.
The report also revealed that the majority of fentanyl-related deaths occurred in the southern region of the province, with 26 deaths reported in the area. This is followed by the northern region with 10 deaths and the eastern region with 2 deaths.
In response to the report, the New Brunswick Health Department has announced several measures to combat the opioid crisis. These include increasing access to harm reduction services, expanding treatment options for those struggling with addiction, and enhancing education and awareness programs.
The department also urged the public to be vigilant and seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with opioid addiction. They also reminded individuals to never use drugs alone and to always carry naloxone, a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
