Start of heat wave blasts temperature records

Kelowna, BC – The start of a heat wave has caused temperatures to soar and break records in the Okanagan Valley. According to Environment Canada, the region has been experiencing an unprecedented heat wave, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The heat wave, which began on Friday, has already broken temperature records in several cities across the Okanagan. In Kelowna, the previous record of 37.2 degrees Celsius set in 1978 was shattered with a new high of 39.8 degrees Celsius. Other cities such as Penticton, Vernon, and Osoyoos have also seen record-breaking temperatures, with Osoyoos reaching a scorching 40.5 degrees Celsius.

The extreme heat has prompted Environment Canada to issue a heat warning for the entire Okanagan region, advising residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces.

The heat wave is expected to continue throughout the weekend and into next week, with temperatures remaining well above seasonal averages. Environment Canada has also warned that the heat could potentially reach dangerous levels, especially for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.

The cause of this heat wave is a high-pressure system that has settled over the region, trapping hot air and preventing cooler air from moving in. This phenomenon, known as a “heat dome,” is not uncommon in the summer months but the intensity and duration of this particular heat wave is unprecedented.

As the heat wave continues, it is important for residents to take necessary precautions and stay informed about any updates or changes in the weather. Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.

In the meantime, residents are advised to stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe during this record-breaking heat wave.
