As temperatures continue to soar in Calgary, animals are finding creative ways to beat the heat. From polar bears to pets, these creatures are adapting to the scorching weather in their own unique ways.
At the Calgary Zoo, polar bears are being treated to frozen treats and misting fans to keep cool. The zoo’s animal care team is closely monitoring the bears’ behavior and adjusting their care accordingly. “We’re making sure they have access to shade, cool water, and ice blocks to play with,” said zoo curator, Colleen Baird.
Meanwhile, at the Calgary Humane Society, staff are reminding pet owners to keep their furry friends safe during the heat wave. “It’s important to never leave your pet in a hot car, even for a few minutes,” said spokesperson, Sage Pullen McIntosh. “And always make sure they have access to fresh water and a cool place to rest.”
For wild animals, the heat can be especially challenging. The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation has seen an increase in calls about animals in distress due to the heat. “We’ve had a lot of calls about birds and small mammals that are dehydrated and struggling to find water,” said executive director, Holly Duvall.
To help these animals, the institute is asking residents to leave out shallow dishes of water and to keep bird baths filled. They also recommend providing shade and shelter for animals in your yard.
In addition to these measures, experts are reminding everyone to be mindful of their own actions during the heat wave. “It’s important to conserve water and energy during these hot days,” said Baird. “We all have a role to play in protecting our environment and the animals that call it home.”
As the heat wave continues, it’s important to remember that animals are also feeling the effects. By taking simple steps to keep them cool and comfortable, we can ensure their well-being during these hot summer days.
