Booted out of NBA, former Raptor Jontay Porter due in court in betting case

Former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter is set to appear in court for a betting case after being booted out of the NBA.

Porter, who played for the Raptors’ G League affiliate team, the Raptors 905, was dismissed from the league after violating its anti-gambling policy. The 21-year-old forward was found to have placed bets on NBA games, which is strictly prohibited by the league.

According to reports, Porter was caught placing bets on games during the 2020-2021 season, which he spent with the Memphis Hustle, the G League affiliate team of the Memphis Grizzlies. The NBA’s investigation into his actions led to his dismissal from the league.

Porter, who was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 2018 but never played for the team due to injuries, signed with the Raptors 905 in February 2021. He played in 14 games for the team before being released in April.

The former Missouri Tigers player is now facing charges for violating the NBA’s anti-gambling policy and is scheduled to appear in court on August 10. If found guilty, he could face a fine and potential jail time.

This is not the first time a player has been dismissed from the NBA for gambling. In 2019, former Phoenix Suns player Richaun Holmes was also dismissed from the league for placing bets on games.

The NBA has strict rules against gambling to maintain the integrity of the game and to prevent any potential conflicts of interest. Players, coaches, and other league personnel are prohibited from betting on any NBA games, including their own team’s games.

Porter’s case serves as a reminder to all players to adhere to the league’s policies and to avoid any actions that could jeopardize their careers. As the NBA continues to grow in popularity, it is crucial for the league to maintain its integrity and ensure fair play for all teams and players.
