The District of Wells in British Columbia has issued an evacuation order due to the ongoing Cornish Mountain wildfire. The order was issued on Monday evening, as the wildfire continues to grow and pose a threat to the community.
According to the District of Wells, the evacuation order affects all properties within the district’s boundaries, including the historic townsite and surrounding areas. Residents are advised to leave the area immediately and head to the designated emergency reception center in Quesnel.
The Cornish Mountain wildfire, which was first reported on June 11, has grown to an estimated 1,500 hectares in size. It is currently listed as out of control and is being fueled by hot and dry weather conditions.
The District of Wells has declared a state of local emergency and is working closely with the Cariboo Regional District and the BC Wildfire Service to manage the situation. Firefighters and equipment have been deployed to the area to contain and suppress the wildfire.
In addition to the evacuation order, the District of Wells has also implemented an evacuation alert for properties located outside of the district’s boundaries. This includes the communities of Barkerville, Bowron Lake Provincial Park, and the Klondike Highway.
